Meet EveryDose’s Medication Adherence Platform

Groove Health mobile app synced to the Groove Health clinical portal

If you follow EveryDose on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, you might know that our medication adherence platform is officially validated and integrated into the Cerner Millennium® EHR. Even if you aren’t a health industry expert, you can probably assume that that’s a pretty big deal. (Hint: it is!)

Our new integration creates a seamless link between clinicians, patients, and their medical records. With EveryDose, patients leave the clinic or hospital with medication lists automatically synced to their smartphones. Our mobile app sends them personalized nudges and medication reminders and reports adherence back to our Clinical Portal. This Clinical Portal is already integrated with Cerner, enabling clinicians to monitor real-time medication compliance data without having to leave the EHR.

Where did the idea for this platform stem from, and how does it work? We’re glad you asked!

Medication non-adherence is a problem

Believe it or not, around 50% of patients don’t take their medications as prescribed. Sometimes, they don’t understand their regimens.[i] Other times, they want to avoid side effects. A lot of the time, patients simply forget. This problem of patients not taking their medications (called “non-adherence”) leads to poor health outcomes and high avoidable healthcare costs. At EveryDose, improving medication adherence is the name of our game.

In order to improve medication adherence, clinicians should have a way of keeping track of their patients’ medication intake. Up until recently, this was a major challenge in the industry. Clinicians would have to administer qualitative adherence surveys or complete pill counts with their patients. These methods are time-consuming, unreliable, and rarely used.

We wanted to do something about it

Nowadays, the technology found in healthcare can help eliminate these hurdles. By using digital solutions like EveryDose’s platform, providers and patients can stay connected past the point of care. This makes medication adherence tracking easier and more accurate than ever before.

Founder and CEO of EveryDose, Andrew Hourani, honed in on the research and development of the platform after hearing the concerns of health professionals regarding medication compliance. He explains:

“We spoke to many health systems that attributed their high readmission rates and penalties to poor medication adherence. The latest SMART on FHIR standards gave us the perfect avenue to create a fully-integrated platform and reimagine the medication experience for patients and clinicians.”

So, we did

As you can imagine, it was no easy task when the team took the idea for this platform and ran with it. Shubham Bothara, EveryDose Data Scientist, mentions:

“The team had multiple long meetings to understand the vision with this product, brainstorming ideas, and defining its scope. User experience, performance, reliability, and security are the central pillars of all our products. It took multiple iterations and revisions to achieve everything that we wanted. It was a great team effort to bring everything together and build a product that our users are happy to use.”

The result of our hard work? Two products, one fully integrated platform

For Clinicians: The EveryDose Clinical Portal

In the EveryDose Clinical Portal, you can quickly assess a patient’s overall medication adherence to identify issues before they occur

The EveryDose Clinical Portal can meet your health system’s needs, no matter how complex. In a rush to get up and running quickly? No problem! Prefer that it’s merged into your EHR? We’ve got you covered. Use Cerner? We’re already integrated!

Once the Clinical Portal is set up, clinicians can easily invite patients to sign up for the EveryDose mobile app, and medication lists are automatically synced to patients’ smartphones.  Any future update to the patient’s medication records will be seamlessly synced to their smartphone.

With EveryDose, clinicians have access to the data they’ve always wanted. As soon as a patient’s medication is marked as taken, skipped, or missed within our mobile app, that information shows up in our Clinical Portal. These insights give providers a clearer picture of a patient’s treatment plan and enable streamlined outreach efforts by prioritizing their least adherent patients.

For Patients: The EveryDose Mobile App

Your patients are fully equipped to manage their medications with our easy-to-use mobile app

AI technology in healthcare is becoming more and more common. We use it to power the Everydose mobile app, which helps patients manage their medications.

Medication regimens and notifications are automatically synced to their smartphones, meaning users simply follow the dosing schedule that pops up on their screen. They can ask our conversational chatbot, Maxwell, questions about their medications and request that loved ones receive progress reports on their medication compliance.

Together, these platforms create a streamlined experience that delivers results

At this point, you might be thinking, “this all sounds great, but I still don’t get HOW it works.” Fear not – we’ll explain.

Our Clinical Portal can be utilized by all clinicians thanks to SMART on FHIR technologies.  If you’re not already familiar with SMART on FHIR, we break it down below:[ii]

  • SMART stands for Substitutable Medical Applications, Reusable Technologies
  • SMART refers to the application, or the way you plug an app into an EHR
  • FHIR stands for Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources
  • FHIR refers to the data, or the way you represent a medication or problem
  • Together, SMART and FHIR create a way to build healthcare apps that don’t rely on one specific vendor
  • This means that apps like the EveryDose SMART app can run across any healthcare system

Using our own SmartSync technology, the Clinical Portal can then sync to our mobile app. With that said:

  • Any time a clinician makes an update to a medication list, the patient’s smartphone reflects the change
  • Any time a patient marks a medication as “taken,” the clinical portal receives that data

This seamless medication experience keeps clinicians and patients on the same page, helping to prevent errors and remain on track.

Our platform does a lot; here are some of our favorite features

Now that you know a bit more of the ins and outs of EveryDose’s digital solutions, we’re shining a spotlight on a few of the elements we know you’d enjoy!

Adherence information on demand

If you want a summary of your patients’ medication compliance, look no further than the “overview” page of our clinical portal. In a quick glance, you can see the adherence rate for each individual medication a patient takes as well as a general adherence average. These insights help you identify potential issues before they occur and categorize your patients for outreach.

Detailed data when you need it

While an overview is great, sometimes you need to dive deeper. By clicking on a date within the portal, you can see the exact time a pill was taken and which ones a patient might’ve skipped or missed. This data is important to uncover the reason a patient might be non-adherent to a certain medication. For instance, if someone needs to be up and at ‘em for work each day and one of the drugs makes them sluggish, you might notice a lower adherence rate for that specific medication and can intervene accordingly.

Easy patient onboarding

Don’t worry – you don’t have to be an expert in SMART on FHIR or AI to navigate the EveryDose platform, and neither do your patients! Our interface is extremely user-friendly, and onboarding patients is a breeze. In just a few simple clicks, you can invite patients to enroll in the EveryDose mobile app and auto-sync their medications directly from the portal.

Want to see us in action?

We know. We just threw a lot of information at you. To make it easier to digest, here are a few examples of our technology at work in the healthcare industry:

Reducing HF readmissions within hospital systems

A hospital system has recently been penalized for high readmission rates in its Heart Failure population. Now, with EveryDose, patients leave the hospital with their medication lists automatically synced to their smartphones, and the hospital’s Transitions team can view live adherence insights during the critical post-discharge period, helping to reduce readmissions.

Simplifying patient tracking for oncology teams

An oncology nurse is overwhelmed by the number of oral chemotherapy patients he must keep track of. His clinic implements the EveryDose application, which gives him an overview of his patients’ medication compliance. Armed with these new insights, he’s now able to streamline his outreach efforts by calling non-adherent patients first.

Avoiding drug interactions

A rheumatoid arthritis patient on Methotrexate has a toothache. She decides to take Aspirin and inputs it into her EveryDose mobile app. The app’s AI technology recognizes a potential drug-drug interaction between Methotrexate and Aspirin and alerts both her and her rheumatologist immediately, avoiding a dangerous medication error.

Pretty cool, right?

We’re in the 21st century, which means the days of surveys, pill counts, and daily follow-up calls are over. Digital health solutions like the EveryDose platform open up a world of possibilities for you, your colleagues, and your patients. What are you waiting for?
